Historical Commentaries

Scholarly Analysis and Interpretation.

An exact repetition of 1-Kings 15:16. From the book before him 1-Kings 15:31 the writer extracts a passage which happens to correspond exactly with one which he has already extracted from the "Book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah." He does not object to repeating himself (compare 1-Kings 14:21, 1-Kings 14:31; 1-Kings 14:30; 1-Kings 15:6; 2-Kings 17:6; 2-Kings 18:11).

There was war - See on 1-Kings 15:16 (note).

And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days. For being a wicked man, and an idolater, Asa had no respect for him, though he had slain the family of Jeroboam; nor had Baasha any regard to Judah, nor to the worship of God at Jerusalem, so that there was no good understanding between them, but frequent acts of hostility, see 1-Kings 15:16.

1-Kings 15:32 is simply a repetition of 1-Kings 15:16; and the remark concerning Baasha's attitude towards Asa of Judah immediately after his entrance upon the government precedes the account of his reign, for the purpose of indicating at the very outset, that the overthrow of the dynasty of Jeroboam and the rise of a new dynasty did not alter the hostile relation between the kingdom of Israel and the kingdom of Judah.
