And Jesus answering said unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

"The men of this age," replied Jesus, "marry, and the women are given in marriage.

And Jesus said to them, The sons of this world are married and have wives;

"The men and women of this world," said Jesus, "marry and are given in marriage;

The children of this world - Men and women in their present state of mortality and probation; procreation being necessary to restore the waste made by death, and to keep up the population of the earth.

And Jesus answering said unto them, The (g) children of this world marry, and are given in marriage:
(g) "The children of this world" refers here to those who live in this world, and not those that are wholly given to the world (and therefore contrary to the children of light), as above in (Luke 16:8).

And Jesus answering, said unto them,.... After he had observed that their error arose from ignorance of the Scriptures, and the power of God:
the children of this world marry, and are given in marriage that is, such who live in this world, in the present mortal and imperfect state, being mortal men, and die, and leave their estates and possessions: these marry, and have wives given them in marriage; and it is very right, and fit, that so it should be, in order to keep up a succession of men, and that they may have heirs to enjoy their substance when they are gone.

said unto them--In Matthew 22:29, the reply begins with this important statement:--"Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures," regarding the future state, "nor the power of God," before which a thousand such difficulties vanish (also Mark 12:24).

The children of this world - The inhabitants of earth, marry and are given in marriage - As being all subject to the law of mortality; so that the species is in need of being continually repaired.
